Kitchen Support / Prep Cook (Cafe + Bakery)

Prequel Cafe — West Town, Chicago

Full-Time | Weekend availability required

Prequel Cafe is a quality-driven cafe with an in-house bakery. Our kitchen is prep and service-focused , supporting an active cafe menu, with additional exposure to bread and pastry production as part of the larger operation.

We’re hiring a Kitchen Support / Prep Cook to handle daily food line prep, station organization, and kitchen cleanliness. This role is primarily food-line and prep driven , with an avenue to learn baking over time for the right candidate.

Core Responsibilities (Primary Focus)

• Prep and assemble sandwiches, toasts, bagels, and cafe menu items

• Execute daily prep lists accurately and efficiently

• Maintain clean, organized, and sanitary workstations

• Assist with dishwashing and maintaining overall kitchen cleanliness as part of shared team responsibilities

• Label, rotate, and organize refrigeration and dry storage

• Communicate prep and ordering needs across shifts

• Adapt to service pace and seasonal volume

• Close and deep-clean the kitchen weekly to standard

Bakery Exposure (Secondary, Skill-Building)

• Assist with bread and pastry prep as needed (mixing support, shaping help, bake-off)

• Learn standardized recipes and production systems

• Support baking team during higher-volume periods

Qualifications

• 1-2+ years kitchen, prep, or cafe line experience

• Comfortable with repetition, pace, and service flow

• Interest in learning baking fundamentals over time

• Strong attention to detail and respect for standards

• Organized, dependable, and proactive

• Weekend availability required

• ServSafe certified or willing to obtain certification
