Interpretive Park Ranger Location Lewisville, TX : Position Summary

Responsible for coordinating interpretive programs and activities of Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) including revenue collection, public relations, enforcement of park ordinances and helping coordinate interpretive activities that are held at LLELA. Responsible for patrolling park and recreational areas, opening and closing of facilities. Starting Pay: $60,649.73, depending on qualifications.

Essential Functions
  • Advises park visitors of recreational opportunities and park rules and ordinances.
  • Conducts high visibility patrols to enforce park ordinances and educate park users.
  • Collects park fees from tollgates and makes daily deposits.
  • Performs light maintenance duties which include general upkeep and cleaning of shoreline and park facilities.
  • Assists with coordination of special events at Lake Park and LLELA.
  • Plans and presents interpretive programs and activities.
  • Coordinates traffic and crowd control when needed.
  • Provides emergency assistance to patrons and the police and fire departments.
  • Supervision of staff as it relates to park operations.
  • Administers standards of operation, policies and procedures.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, Natural Resource Management, Recreation, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field.
Experience:
  • 3 years of experience in parks and recreation, outdoor recreation, natural sciences, law enforcement, military, or a related field.
  • Any combination of related, education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job may be considered as an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES Knowledge of:
  • Basic knowledge of math and cash handling procedures.
  • Park procedures and ordinances.
  • Natural and cultural resources management.
  • Recreation program and activity planning.
  • Park rules and ordinance education and enforcement techniques.
Ability to:
  • Accurately count and account for fees and sales receipts.
  • Handle complaints, emergencies, stressful situations and large groups of people.
  • Ride a mountain bike for patrol of hike and bike trails.
  • Operate a variety of equipment and vehicles in a skilled and safe manner.
  • Train and lead employees and volunteers effectively.
  • Perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
  • Accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.
  • Work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Follow instructions, safety practices and standard operating procedures in performing assigned tasks.
  • Be punctual and attend work regularly.
  • Work effectively with people regardless of their age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or job type.
  • Perform work accurately and thoroughly.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Skills in:
  • Microsoft Office, Open Office or similar word processing programs, e-mail and the internet.
  • Planning, organizing and implementing public presentations, and guided tours for various ages.
  • Effective interpretive techniques that help people understand, appreciate, and emotionally connect with the rich natural and cultural heritage preserved in parks.
  • Providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.
Other Requirements:
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver's License Class ā€œCā€ and good driving record as defined by City policy.
    • An applicant who does not possess a Texas Driver's License or proper class, will be allowed ten (10) working days after a job offer is made to obtain proper licensing.
  • Must be able to be on-call as needed.
  • Must be able to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends.
Work Hours

Schedule will vary by season. Typical workdays are Friday - Tuesday. Holiday, evenings, & weekends are required. Park Ranger will be on-call at times outside of regular hours.
